Lake Wales Police adding more dash cams, stun gun cans

POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The Lake Wales police department is making a few changes to how it handles dash cams in patrol cars.

The department recently used dash cams and video-enabled stun guns to capture a confrontation with some angry residents after a traffic stop. The dash cam video showed how officers and residents really responded, and the stun gun cameras showed a suspect being taken down.

Police Chief Herbert Gillis said all the video is invaluable in figuring out what really happened, and so he is ordering enough dash cams to outfit all of the department's patrol cars.

"We absolutely support video 100 percent in this agency because we strive for transparency and accountability," he said.

Gillis is even testing out small video recorders attached to officers' shirts to capture interaction with citizens.

"Sometimes the incident may occur within a residence, you know, well away from the car that can record video and audio," he said. "The thought is with this it can accompany the officers."

Gillis said the great thing about the shirt cameras is that they are inexpensive, only a couple of hundred dollars a piece.

Another dozen dash cam units will cost the department more than $40,000.
