Lakeland Police Department holds open house

The weather was perfect for the event and by all appearances the crowds agreed.  Many citizens jammed the lobby to tour the Communication Center and Crime Scene Area.  Outside officer’s displayed S.W.A.T. team tools, weapons, and transport unit. Officer Gomez, who was off duty healing from an injury, was also there. He showed the S.I.D.N.E. (simulated impaired drivin experience) this is a new computerized go cart that LPD and PCSO purchased with a grant from Geico insurance. Gomez is in charge of the cart and takes it to schools and events in the surrounding area and teaches the experience of driving while impaired.  The carts computer delays the driver’s reaction time, similar to that of an impaired driver.  Gomes says that he has complete control of the cart and can slow or stop as needed.
LPD and the PCSO encourage other local agency and organization to contact them and set up a date for the experience at your event or school. Officer Gomez can be reach via email at
