Naked inmate foiled in escape attempt in Polk County
Latest News Local

POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A naked and shackled Polk County jail inmate managed to escape briefly from the Lake Wales Hospital on Tuesday.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, inmate Bradley Norris was receiving treatment at the hospital when he tried to make a getaway.

Just after noon, Norris told detention deputy Michelle Threatt he had to use the restroom. As he headed out of the room, Norris hit Threatt over the head, overpowered her and ran out of the room. In the process, his hospital gown was ripped off.

Wearing only socks and ankle shackles, Norris tried to run out of the hospital.

"What he had planned to do was beat our deputy down,' Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said. "Take her firearm from her--shoot her...and shoot his way out of Lake Wales hospital. Because she fought him so valiantly that didn't happen.'

Norris was found about 300 yards away from the hospital on State Road 60.

Lake Wales police officers and Polk County Sheriff's deputies quickly took him back into custody.

Threatt was treated for a head injury. She is expected to be fine.
